Choosing a Refinisher

Finding a competent refinisher is more difficult than it may seem. If you make a poor choice you could be in for some rough water. Many customers call us because their previously refinished tubs are peeling or are streaked. Most likely these surfaces were not prepared correctly or inferior materials were used. Here are some qualities to consider when looking for a professional reglazer:

Experience:

Nothing takes the place of experience. Look for at least 5 years of experience in refinishing tubs.

Quality materials:

Quality materials can make all the difference. Second-rate materials may save $10 – $25 on a tub, but there is a good chance the end result will suffer. Poor quality materials have a tendency to chip or even peel. We get calls all the time from customers who saved a buck or two but then were faced with having the piece refinished in a year or two. A tub that has been refinished with good quality materials should provide 10 years or more of useful life if properly maintained.

Workspace preparation:

Overspray prevention and proper ventilation are critical for a successful outcome. Overspray is where bits of the coating find there way to your walls. This may not be a problem if the coating and the walls are white, but any other combination and the problem will stick out like a sore thumb. A skilled technician will mask the area. Ventilation is very important for both you and the operator. Some companies use a box fan in a window; this is not good enough! Top-notch companies will ventilate the area with a clean air system that pulls vents to the outside. This will keep your home relatively odor free.

Warranty:

Don’t rely on the word of the person who may only want to make a sale. Written warranties help ensure you receive a good finished project; insist on one.
